Legal Operations Specialist/Paralegal

Position Description

FPA’s Legal Department is looking to add a hybrid Legal Operations Specialist/Paralegal position that will have primary responsibility for assisting the Head of Legal run the legal operations for the firm.  The qualified candidate may also assist with other special projects for other FPA departments as needed. The candidate sought will have an ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment, and someone who will be able to create business-minded solutions, consistent with the firm’s risk tolerance.  The Head of Legal intends for this position to greatly assist in managing the legal operations at FPA, and this person should be very detail-oriented, driven, affable and professional.  Please note: The preferred work location is Los Angeles, CA as a hybrid office/work from home based position, however, full remote work, in another geographic location may be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Head of Legal and work independently to facilitate the legal administration of a variety of funds – specifically, fund formation, fund launches, reorganizations and governing document updates;
  • Review and negotiate non-disclosure agreements (and run related conflicts checks), ISDAs, broker agreements and vendor contracts with the oversight of the Head of Legal;
  • Act as the primary contact to assist in the administration of certain private structured investments, including, managing execution of ministerial documents, responding to Know Your Customer (KYC) requests with trading brokers, exchanges and deal counterparties etc.
  • Liaise with Client Service & Business Development, Portfolio Managers and investment analysts, Investment Operations, Trading and other departments to ensure the accurate and timely completion of requests;
  • Manage annual updates to contracts and regulatory documents with the assistance of outside counsel;
  • Assist FPA’s Managing Partner, CFO, COO and CCO on special projects, which may include assisting with compiling board books, implementation of new processes due to regulatory changes, and the launch of new products, etc.;
  • Manage country openings for trading purposes;

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable substantive related experience required.
  • A minimum of 6-8 years of related investment adviser/company experience, inclusive of prior in-house experience with hands on legal administration and knowledge of mutual funds, private structured investments, non-disclosure and vendor agreements preferred.
  • Knowledge of the Investment Advisers Act of 1940;
  • Experience with the Investment Company Act of 1940 preferred;
  • Ability to communicate effectively across the organization, with excellent analytical, written, verbal and organizational skills;
  • Ability to work independently and customarily and regularly exercise discretion and independent judgement under general supervision.
  • Demonstrable leadership, consulting, presentation and project management skills;
  • Highly organized, detail oriented, self-motivated and directed, capable of monitoring and completing a variety of projects simultaneously, ability to keep abreast of regulatory changes impacting FPA’s business; and
  • Successful track record of building internal and external working relationships and managing resources effectively.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat DC.
